This Week in the Vineyard
This week transitions from March to April. The weather is quite mercurial as you can imagine in Oregon this time of year. The blessed sun is peaking out more and more from behind the dense layers of fog and clouds. I still believe there are no signs of actual bud break in the Valley yet, but you can tell they are swelling and aching to break into the season. The picture from above was taken at Brooks Winery in the Eola-Amity AVA, and the buds are much further along in development than those at La Cantera. As the bud swells, the white cotton sheath breaks away as a light brown hair encases the green bud that is visible now. Also occurring this week is a visible flow of sap out of the wounds from the pruning cuts. This is indeed a sign of spring.
